Culter House

Hidden amongst the forests of Peterculter in Aberdeenshire is Culter House, once the boarding house to St Margaret’s School for Girls in Aberdeen. I was sent there to join my sister when I was ten. My parents lived in Nigeria and this became my home during term time with the sixty other girls who lived there. The dormitories were all named after Scottish Abbeys and I recently spent a week texting my old school chums trying to remember them all. The boarding house was run by the wonderful Ma Bowlt who tucked us all in as her own. Sunday nights were always a riot as we tumbled into her flat sitting room to watch “All Creatures Great and Small”. On the opposite wing lived our formidable Headmistress, Miss Bosomworth who drove a tan coloured Austin Allegra, and was know to us all as “Tits”. Although I was terribly homesick to begin with, I absolutely loved my time there and still have many cherished friendships from that time.
